Why I Love It:
I might be a little biased with this one (due to my employment with the company) but SOPHY Hyde Park can easily be considered the south side’s favorite child. Everyone that personally knows me, know that Hyde Park has been my favorite neighborhood for years. The sophisticated and diverse black culture throughout the neighborhood is unmatched. The hotel development team perfectly blended Hyde Park’s black and university culture all into one.
The moment you walk in the doors you’re greeted by south side legacy—the lobby and lounge is inspired by Chicago’s Queen of Gospel Mahaliah Jackson with bold colors, instrument/music elements with a University flavor. The portrait of President Barack Obama (the only president we acknowledge on this site) made of pennies will stop you in your tracks. Every hallway is decked with artwork by local Chicago artists—which is one of my favorite features of the hotel. Every art piece visually tells a different story. I adore hotels with bright lighting and simple but artsy designs and Sophy hit it on the mark. The floor to ceiling windows (always a plus), hardwood floors, record player and electric/chic style will make you never want to leave the rooms.
Sadly, the hotel lacks amenities outside of the usual bar, restaurant and fitness center. I would’ve loved to see the hotel include a rooftop area, pool or art gallery area to fit the theme. The on-site restaurant, Mesler, is a popular spot with an outdoor patio spot. The restaurant offers traditional American dishes—during brunch, the chicken and waffles is always my go-to every single time.
Overall, there’s not really a hotel in the Chicago area quite like Sophy. The design team spared no expense in the details (I know this people). Once you get over the negative stereotypes of Chicago’s South Side, the area is a hidden gem with so many great spots.
